Stroller Wheel choices create a great deal of confusion. When is a swivel better than a fixed?
Is the 16 inch wheel better than the 20 inch? Is aluminum better than alloy?
Do I need quick release?

First,
we
will
give you some definitions, and then tell you what to look for
based on your activities. A front swivel wheel rotates through 360 degrees (like a shopping cart) and is easy to maneuver. It usually comes with a locking mechanism that can fix it in the forward position. A front fixed wheel does not rotate but is fixed in the forward position. It is best for running in a straight line on a smooth surface. 16 or 20 inch tires provide a smoother ride on rough surfaces and an easy push on road or concrete. However, they make the stroller bulky and more difficult to get in and out of tight spots. They are the ideal size for running and jogging. Aluminum rims are light, do not rust, and are appropriate for a pure jogging-stroller. However they add to the cost of the stroller. Alloy rims are also light, do not rust, and are cheaper than aluminum Quick release option allows you to remove wheels quickly for easy storage without using tools. |

Now that you know what all
this means, how does it apply to you? If
you keep in mind how and where you intend to use the stroller, then the
stroller wheel choices become very simple indeed: 1. For runners and power walkers: Choose a fixed wheel model with either 16 or 20 inch road tires, aluminum rims for lighter weight, and quick release for fast maintenance and storage. 2. For mall shoppers and urban settings: choose a swivel wheel model with either 12 inch wheels, or 12 inch front and 16 inch back for greater maneuverability in tight spots. 3. For Trail runners or hikers: Choose a fixed wheel, or lockable swivel front, with alloy rims for easy cleaning, and knobby off-road tires for better grip. |
